The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program is an American Kennel Club (AKC) initiative designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start.
What “S.T.A.R.” Stands For:
Socialization
Training
Activity
Responsibility
What the Program Involves:
Basic Training & Behavior Goals:
Puppies learn basic commands (sit, come, stay, etc.).
Owners learn about responsible pet ownership.
Puppies must not show aggression and should be comfortable being handled.
6-Week Training Class:
Conducted by an AKC-approved CGC (Canine Good Citizen) evaluator.
Teaches both owner and puppy important skills, including:
Accepting a friendly stranger
Walking on a loose leash
Tolerating a collar or harness
Allowing grooming/handling
S.T.A.R. Puppy Test:
Given at the end of the course.
Includes 20 test items covering behavior, training, and owner knowledge.
Not a pass/fail test for the dog — it's about showing good effort and progress.
Benefits of Passing the Test:
AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Medal and Certificate
Enrollment in AKC records as a “S.T.A.R. Puppy”
Subscription to the AKC Family Dog magazine
Foundation for continuing on to the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program
Why It’s Valuable:
Builds a strong bond between you and your puppy.
Encourages early socialization and proper manners.
Helps prevent future behavior problems.
Great first step toward advanced obedience, therapy dog training, or AKC titles.
